ADVICE FOR PREVENTION OF KIDNEY STONES


 

RISK FACTORS:

 

-        Dehydration

-        Excessive protein

-        Excessive salt

-        Family history

-        Gout

-        Underlying metabolic condition

-        Overactive parathyroid gland in the neck.

-        Anatomical problems of the kidney

 

DIETARY ADVICE:

 

1.      Water intake: 2 to 3 Litre   per day

2.      Reduce Salt intake

3.      Reduce protein intake: about 150 grams of meat, fish, chicken per day

4.      Avoid protein drinks and supplements

5.      Normal calcium intake: Avoid excessive dairy foods (Milk, cream, cheese) and Calcium supplements

6.      Avoid Foods high in Oxalate: Spinach, Rhubarb, Cocoa, Tea, Coke, Almonds.

7.      Drink more Citrus juices (Lemon)

8.      Eat more Fruit and vegetables

9.      Eat more cereals and fibre

10. Avoid soft drinks and mineral water
